Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie dikenal sebagai B. J. Habibie lahir pada tanggal 25 Juni 1936. Dia adalah Presiden Ketiga Republik Indonesia (1998-1999). Habibie lahir di Parepare, Provinsi Sulawesi Selatan dari Alwi Abdul Jalil Habibie dan R. A. Tuti Marini Puspowardojo. Ayahnya adalah seorang petani dari Gorontalo, ibu dari keturunan Bugis dan ibunya adalah seorang wanita bangsawan Jawa dari Yogyakarta. Orang tuanya bertemu saat Stüdying di Bogor. Ketika berusia 14 tahun, ayah Habibie meninggal.

Menyusul kematian ayahnya, Habibie melanjutkan studinya di Jakarta dan kemudian pada tahun 1955 pindah ke Jerman. Pada tahun 1960, Habibie menerima gelar sarjana teknik di Jerman, memberinya gelar Diplom-Ingenieur. Dia tetap di Jerman sebagai asisten peneliti di bawah Hans Ebner di Lehrstuhl und Institut fur Leichtbau, RWTH Aachen untuk melakukan penelitian untuk gelar doktoralnya.

Pada tahun 1962, Habibie kembali ke Indonesia selama tiga bulan dengan cuti sakit. Selama waktu ini, ia berkenalan kembali dengan Hasri Ainun, putri R. Mohamad Besari. Keduanya menikah pada 12 Mei 1962, kembali ke Jerman tak lama setelah itu. Habibie dan istrinya menetap di Aachen untuk waktu yang singkat sebelum pindah ke Oberforstbach. Pada bulan Mei 1963 mereka memiliki putra pertama mereka, Ilham Akbar Habibie, dan kemudian putra lainnya, Thareq Kemal Habibie.

Ketika gaji minimum Habibie memaksanya untuk bekerja, ia menemukan pekerjaan Marque Talbot dengan Otomotif, di mana ia menjadi penasihat. Habibie mengerjakan dua proyek yang menerima dana dari Deutsche Bundesbahn. Karena pekerjaannya dengan Makosh, kepala konstruksi kereta api menawarkan posisinya untuk pensiun tiga tahun kemudian, tetapi Habibie menolak.

Habibie menerima posisi Hamburg dengan Messerschmitt-Bolkow-Blohm. Di sana, dikembangkan teori tentang termodinamika, konstruksi, dan aerodinamika yang dikenal sebagai Faktor Habibie, Teorema Habibie, dan Metode Habibie. Dia bekerja untuk Messerschmit pada pengembangan pesawat Airbus A-300B. Pada 1974, ia dipromosikan menjadi wakil presiden perusahaan.

Pada 1974, Suharto meminta Habibie untuk kembali ke Indonesia sebagai bagian dari upaya Suharto untuk membangun negara. Habibie awalnya menjabat sebagai asisten khusus untuk Ibnu Sutowo, CEO perusahaan minyak negara Pertamina. Dua tahun kemudian, pada tahun 1976, Habibie diangkat menjadi Chief Executive Officer di perusahaan Industri Pesawat Gerbang Nusantara milik negara yang baru. Pada tahun 1978, ia ditunjuk sebagai Menteri Riset dan Teknologi. Habibie terpilih sebagai wakil presiden pada Maret 1998. Pada 21 Mei 1998, Suharto secara terbuka mengumumkan pengunduran dirinya dan Habibie segera dilantik sebagai presiden. Pemerintahan Habibie telah distabilkan dalam menghadapi krisis keuangan Asia dan kekacauan dalam beberapa bulan terakhir kepresidenan Suharto.

Sejak melepaskan jabatan presiden, Habibie telah menghabiskan lebih banyak waktu di Jerman daripada di Indonesia. Namun, ia juga aktif sebagai penasihat presiden pada masa kepresidenan Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. Pada bulan September 2006, ia merilis sebuah buku berjudul Detik-Detik Yang Menentukan: Jalan Panjang Indonesia Menuju Demokrasi (Momen Penentu: Jalan Panjang Menuju Demokrasi Indonesia). Buku itu mengenang peristiwa Mei 1998.
